Jane Russell is first-rate, too.

I just read recently (from a Joe DiMaggio bio) that Walter Winchell may have helped hurry the demise of the Monroe-DiMaggio marriage. He was a friend of DiMaggio's, and urged Joe to come to NY to see Marilyn film the infamous subway grating scene in The Seven Year Itch. Joe was home in San Francisco. He generally avoided Marilyn's filming and Hollywood in general. But Winchell was persistent and Joe came. Winchell dragged him out to 52nd Street to see Billy Wilder's publicity stunt (they didn't even use the NY-shots in the final film). Winchell had to know that Joe would lose it when he saw Marilyn being ogled by thousands of fans who came to see the shoot. I don;t think Winchell was fond of Marilyn or the match.xoxoxohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11993751439653647136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3808487949051617772.post-54438187799818298392012-09-27T14:18:27.747-04:002012-09-27T14:18:27.747-04:00"Women were cast for their beauty ... " ..."Women were cast for their beauty ... " Indeed. Interesting, isn't it, the way Monroe and Grable were photographed as Walter Winchell's ... well, how do I put it, arm candy as opposed to eye candy?, in that "Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable to Ciro" film you posted. Regardless of what Winchell's relationship with the two actually was, that's how those photos come across.

I confess I've never seen Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, something I intend to rectify a.s.a.p., but I do remember the Madonna video "Material Girl" very clearly. Not only did she channel Monroe perfectly, she completely undermined the message of both songs by going off with the ordinary (as far as she knows) guy with the daisies and the old truck at the end.

--MarioJJMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13404985455733545060noreply@blogger.com
