scary monsters and super creepy kids

After watching a bunch of scary and spooky movies in honor of this spooktacular Halloween season, especially The Awakening and The Haunting of Julia, it occurred to me that more often than not, especially in ghost movies, the chills are centered around a child, whether dead or alive. This most likely touches on all of our inner children, as that is what most reacts to the things that go bump in the night, what truly scares us. I tend to prefer such movies, which focus more on the psychological aspects of fear, as opposed to slash and gore-fests.

Night of the Demon (brilliant film; its only real flaw is that they show the daemon at the end -- the studio insisted that be put in). The Haunting and The Legend of Hell House (great double feature; second one not really suitable for children). Not scary, not entirely Halloween, but: A Nightmare before Christmas. The Innocents (based, of course, on Turn of the Screw). The Abominable Dr Phibes (plus the sequel, and the similarly themed Theatre of Blood). Any of the Roger Corman adaptations of Edgar Allen Poe, but especially Masque of the Red Death. The Blair Witch Project, which (before we got jaded by the hype and all the imitations) was pretty darn effective and a darn good job. Don't Look Now, based on the Daphne Du Maurier short story.
Oops, sorry, I belatedly notice you already cited Don't Look Now.
These are all great movies Mario - thanks! I haven't seen Phibes in years - that would be especially fun to check out again : )
