this might actually not ... suck

The first trailer for Tim Burton's and Johnny Depp's Dark Shadows premiered on Ellen on Thursday. I have to admit that I have been dreading another Burton/Depp film, as the last few things they have done together were extremely disappointing. But if the flavor of the wacky trailer is true to the finished film, this may be more of an Ed Wood than an Alice in Wonderland, which would be wonderful. Here's hoping ...

Unfortunately, Dark Shadows fans weren't aware that Burton was planning a spoof ... To them, the trailers show the new film is a travesty instead of a re-envisioning of the core story. Like the fans, I am disappointed. Oh, well ...

I used to watch DS after we got home from school - my mom had a huge crush on Barnabas. I thought Quentin was pretty cute. I guess I'm actually happy that Burton & Depp are approaching the show in this way. When Burton tries to do a serious homage - Alice in Wonderland, Planet of the Apes - it's a disaster.

I won't be confusing this movie with the original. I think he's using the characters as a framework for his quirky humor. So I'm hoping for something more along the lines of Ed Wood or Mars Attacks. But I hear you. Luckily, my mom probably doesn't remember Jonathan Frid enough to be insulted. And she loves Johnny Depp.
