favorite movie #47: ball of fire (1941)

Favorite movies that have had an impact on me - #47 - Ball of Fire (1941) - Howard Hawks directs a delightful take on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with this screwball comedy. Grammarian Bertram Potts (Gary Cooper) is studying slang for a new encyclopedia, and who better to help him than nightclub entertainer Sugarpuss O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck), who needs to lay low for a while, as the cops are after her to testify against her mobster boyfriend Joe Lilac (Dana Andrews). The screenplay was written by Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder, who keeps popping up on my list of fave films. After watching Hawks on the set of this film Wilder started directing his own. Stanwyck's fabulous costumes are by Edith Head.
